Five years had passed since the liberation of Kilinochchi from the terrorists. The intention of the terrorists was to make Kilinochchi the capital of Eelam which was their dream.
The brave soldiers liberated Kilinochchi from the terrorists on 02nd January 2009. The 57th Division which advanced to the North from the South surrounded Kilinochchi while the members of the Security Forces of the 58th Division who advanced towards Kilinochchi via Paranthan and Sinna Paranthan unleashed a massive attack on the terrorists. Even though the terrorists took the initiative of protecting Kilinochchi maintaining their security with the support of the Akkarayankulam earth bund which was about 12 kilometres long, the security forces succeeded in shattering the bund and commence their advancement.
As a result the troops managed to tactically acquire Kilinochchi. Accordingly the troops succeeded in capturing hubs of the LTTE including the so-called Peace Secretariat, the LTTE Police Headquarters and a special centre where terrorist leaders met special representatives. The war heroes due to their tactical strategies in this manner liberated Kilinochchi from the terrorists, whose leader Prabhakaran boasted that not even a crow can fly over the town. Kilinochchi has now become a town which is fast developing in a peaceful environment and where the civilians are breathing a sigh of relief.
In the meantime, the Army “Suwa Sahana Fund” and a luxury bus service were launched today marking the 5th Anniversary of the Liberation of Kilinochchi from the terrorists. The new bus service will facilitate members of the Sri Lanka Army and their family members to undertake leisure tours. The launch of the luxury bus service took place under the auspices of the Army Commander Lt. Gen. Daya Ratnayake.
Major General Jagath Dias former General Officer Commanding of the 57th Division who participated on the occasion recalled how the operation was mooted to liberate Kilinochchi.
