Gazette Notification on Pictorial warnings in cigarette packs presented in Parliament

The Extraordinary Gazette Notification containing orders mentioning that pictorial warnings should be displayed on the packet of cigarettes was presented to Parliament today. The pictorial warning should cover at least 80 percent of the packet. Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva presented the Gazette Notification to Parliament on behalf of the Health Minister.

Minister Nimal Siripala said that he was presenting the Gazette Notification containing provisions in respect of pictorial warnings prepared by the Health Minister.

The pictorial warning should be printed on both sides of the packet, the parcel or light cardboard box containing cigarettes. The warning should cover at least 80 percent of the cigarette packet. Misleading messages on the impact caused to the health as a result of the smoke should not be included.

It is also mentioned in the Gazette Notification that cigarette packets could not be produced, imported or sold sans pictorial warnings. The quantity of nicotine containing the product should be clearly mentioned and it is prohibited to cover these warnings with other photographs.

The Gazette Notification further states that these warnings should be changed every six months. The new regulation is being enforced following the mediation of Minister Maithripala Sirisena with the aim of moulding a healthy generation.
