The use of some additives for food is proscribed with effect from the 01st of July. The Health Ministry has emphasized tht it is mandatory to forward a safety and suitability certificate in the process of importing any additive or flavor enhancement.
Food additives cannot be imported sans a certificate issued by the authority of the country in which the additive has been produced. The storage, transport, sale, distribution, usage and publicity of such additives are also barred.
Accordingly the Health Ministry has banned nearly 19 varieties of additives which could be harmful to health. However, the Health Ministry has permitted the use of some food additives.
The Health Services Director General have been vested with powers necessary to institute legal action in respect of any person or establishment using proscribed food additives.
