Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has emphasized in Parliament that the Government has not at all recorded or tapped any telephone conversations. The Minister was responding to a query made by Parliamentrian Ravi Karunanayake about the Government’s covert recording of telephone conversations.
Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake told the Minister that in the allocations of funds to him he had requested for a grant to tap telephones.
Minister Nimal Siripala said that he was unaware that such allocations had been made. He queried at to what supplementary estimates contained a request for money to tap telephones. The sectors concerned had confirmed that no such allocations had been made. He requested the Parliamentarian not to base his queries on rumours. Minister Nimal Siripala emphasized that the Government was not tapping any telephones.
