President Rajapaksa and the First Lady have joined in a mass celebrated at the Holy church of the Nativity.
President Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa are on a tour of the Palestine State joined in a midnight mass held before the dawn of the Orthodox Christmas at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Although Christmas falls on the 25th of December, The Orthodox Christian Sect celebrates Christmas, the birth of Christ on January 07th. Palestinian President Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian First Lady and Prime Minister Ram Hamdellah joined President Rajaaksa on this occasion.
The Church of the Nativity has been built in the premises where Jesus Christ was born. UNESCO has declared it as a world heritage. It is a place of religious worship frequented by Christian and well as Islamic devotees. The Head of the Eastern Orthodox Church Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos the III held a banquet in honour of President Rajapaksa and the First Lady.
