16,000 litres of illegally imported ethanol recovered

Customs have seized a stock of 16,000 litres of ethanol.


A large scale rack of releasing stocks of spoilt vegetables to the market has also been uncovered.


The Customs Revenue Task Force was able to detect 16,000 litres of ethanol in 80 barrels concealed in a container at the Customs Clearing Yard at Orugodawatte which was to be despatched out of the Harbour. The detection was made on a tip off received by the Task Force. Attempts had been made to take the container out of the Customs by producing fake documents.


Customs Director Thilak Perera said that the value of the stock of ethanol was 10 million rupees.


In the meantime, Health officials of the Kandy Municipal Council had succeeded in uncovering a racket of stocking vegetables unsuitable for consumption and rejected by the Kandy Central Market. These were to be despatched to the market again. The racket was operative at a location near the Kandy Market. Following the raid the Public Health Officials succeeded in uncovering information on the racket. Four suspects have been taken into custody. The Kandy Municipal Council said that legal action will be instituted against these suspects.
