The Sri Lankan government lodged a strong official protest at the allegations made by the US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes.
The Sri Lankan Government expressed its strong protest against a message uploaded by the US Embassy on its twitter page mentioning that hundreds of civilians were killed by the Army during the final stages of the war.
Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunathilaka Amunugama emphasized that Minister Prof G L Peiris had conveyed Sri Lanka’s dissatisfaction when he met with visiting US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues Stephen J. Rapp yesterday. The US representative toured the North in the past few days. The US Embassy in Colombo had uploaded 3 photographs of Rapp’s tour in Pudumathalan on its Twitter page. The second photograph of the duo titled “the site where many were killed by army shelling in 2009 January”.
Foreign Secretary Amunugma mentioned that it was conveyed to the US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes that the US had levelled such allegations without any basis.
