The Elections Commissioner plans to allow party candidates to be present at the counting centers with the aim of improving transparency of election results. Elections commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that the new plans would be implemented during the forthcoming Western and Southern provincial council elections. The Elections Commissioner said that his department was prepared to conduct elections at any time. He disclosed that 2013 voters list would be used for elections this year. He added that after discussions with political parties and candidates, to permit a representative of a candidate to be present at the counting centers when counting preferential votes. However he said that a decision would be taken following discussions at consultative meetings with party secretaries.
