The remains of victims killed in the Lion Air flight, shot down in 1998 by LTTE, displayed in Jaffna

The remains of victims killed in the Lion Air flight which is believed to have been shot down by LTTE terrorists thirteen years ago, were displayed in Jaffna for relatives to identify them. Antonov 24 flight belonging to Lion Air Company took off from Palali on 28th September 1998 with 17 passengers. The flight disappeared within 20 minutes after taking off. The mystery of the missing flight was revealed following the arrest of a LTTE terrorist in 2011. He disclosed that the flight was shot down over Irrenathivu sea by a missile. Thereafter the wreckage of Lion Air flight was salvaged by the Navy off Irrenativu. When the remains of the victims were displayed at Jaffna Municipal Council premises yesterday, many people were able to identify their relatives. Speaking to media they condemned the atrocities committed by LTTE terrorists, the so called liberators of Tamil people.
