Laws should be crafted to facilitate and not hinder the people – President

President Raapaksa has said that laws and regulations of a country should be crafted to facilitate the day to day activities of the people and not to hinder them.

The President made this observation at a ceremony held in Moratuwa. It was organized in respect of the opening of the three storeyed building of the Moratuwa Municipal Council reconstructed at a cost of 30 million rupees. The President thereafter declared open the Moratuwa Library building which was put up at a cost of 15 million rupees.

Further speaking on the occasion, the President said that all laws and regulations of a country should be crafted for the convenience of the people.

The President said that development is now taking place in the country and this is clearly being witnessed. The fishery as well as the carpentry industries are very strong in Moratuwa. It was with the intention of further strengthening the carpentry industry it was proposed in the budget that permits were not necessary for the transport of finished goods. A Government exists not to hinder the people or trouble but to facilitate them. If so archaic laws should be gradually scrapped. Taking this into consideration, the Government abolished the rule of securing permits for the transport of finished goods. The President opined that their determination is to grant more facilities to the people

Continuing his address the President accused that some are determined to betray the country. During his visit to Cuba, the Cuban President told him not to take such allegations into account. Resolutions had been approved against Cuba at the Geneva Commission on 60 occasions. The President said that during his visit to Israel, the Prime Minister there told him that Resolutions were being tabled against them every day. But for Sri Lanka, the President said it was only three for the time being. The President mentioned that this was an annoyance for the country. Sri Lanka is next to China in economic development in the Asian Region.

The President pointed out that the responsibility of the parent should be to protect and guide their children. Religious leaders should also direct them towards the correct path. A Government or a Police alone cannot safeguard the children from pernicious material flowing into the country from the world. He said the children should be protected for the future of the country. He mentioned that they should be geared to direct the children towards the correct path.

The President handed over prizes to those who contributed to the reconstruction of the Moratuwa Municipal Council building complex and the construction of the Library building. The people of Moratuwa paid tribute to the President by presenting him with a memento. 500 thousand rupees collected by the people of Moratuwa for the Api Wenuwen Api Fund was handed over to the President. Minister Jeevan Kumaratunge, Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando and many political representatives of the area were present on the occasion.
