Sangakkara blasts triple century

The Bangla Desh team which exhausted themselves in the face of a vigorous batting explosion from Kumar Sangakkara who scored a classic triple century (319) had collected 86 for the loss of 1 wicket for the first innings at close of play on the second day of the second Test played with Sri Lanka. As such, Bangla Desh is 501 runs behind Sri Lanka in the first innings.



Kumar Sangakkara became the 23rd player to get a triple century in the history of world cricket yesterday (Feb 5) and he went into the record books in history as the third Sri Lankan to achieve such a distinguished performance. The other two batsmen who performed equal feats before Sangakkara for Sri Lanka were Sanath Jayasooriya (340) and Mahela Jayawardena (374).

Kumar Sangakkara also holds the record as the batsman who has amassed the fastest 11,000 run mark in the least number of Test innings.



Having created a new record yesterday (Feb 5), Sangakkara had played 208 innings in 122 matches to achieve this accomplishment. Prior to this, that record was held by super-batsman Brian Lara of West Indies and he had reached the 11,000 run mark in 213 innings in 121 Tests.



With Sangakkara's innings, he has equalled the record of being in second position as Brian Lara for having achieved the most number of twin centuries. Lara and Sangakkara have both got 9 twin centuries each while Australia's Don Bradman is in the forefront with 12 centuries.



Prior to the triple century Sangakkara got yesterday, his highest innings was his innings of 287 against South Africa in the year 2006. In order to score the triple century thus mentioned, he once got together with batsmen down the order at one time and in the over where he reached his triple century, he was successful in scoring 2 sixes and 1 four.



When accomplished batsmen were back in the pavilion, Sangakkara was able to maintain a partnership of 100 runs for the 8th wicket with Ajantha Mendis and the latter scored 47 in 67 balls with 6 fours. Sangakkara then continued with a partnership of 54 runs with the last batsman in, Nuwan Pradeep.



Sangakkara scored his 319 runs in 482 balls and the innings comprised of 32 fours and 8 sixes. On behalf of Bangla Desh, Shakeeb Hassan engaged in a tiring spell by clinching 5 wickets for 148 runs to demolish the Sri Lankan innings.
