50 luxury buses to SLTB to operate on expressways

The Sri Lanka Transport Board gets 50 luxury buses. The handing over of the buses to the SLTB took place under the patronage of the President.


The luxury buses brought to the country in view of the Commonwealth Summit, were handed over to the Sri Lanka Transport Board at the Galle Face Green in Colombo this morning under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. The buses will be used for operation on the Expressways and within the tourism industry. Earlier a decision was taken to reduce the bus fare along the Southern Expressway from 500 to 420 rupees on the instructions of the President.


Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board L.A. Wimalaratne said that the buses given by the President today will be distributed among 50 main depots in the island. Allocations have been made in this budget to purchase 2200 buses to upgrade the public transport services. Minister Kumara Welgama expressing views on the occasion said that this would help to maintain an efficient and streamlined service provided by the SLTB.


The President has given them an opportunity to take SLTB towards a new path. In the budget the President approved the granting of 2200 buses for the SLTB. These buses would soon be got down. Then it would be possible to take out buses which have been in service for about 15 years and add the new buses to the fleet. The Minister also said that these buses could also be used to develop the tourism industry. The buses would be properly maintained if they are used in the tourism industry. He added that it would be possible even to earn an income.


Minister S.B. Dissanayake and Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake were present at this function. After handing over the luxury buses, the President boarded a bus and drove it for a short distance.
