President Rajapaksa has instructed the officials of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resource Management to craft an immediate programme to solve problems which surface as a result of the drought. He also told them to give priority to safeguarding the environment in the development process.
The President had a discussion this morning with official of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management on irrigation development activities. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Secretary to the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management Ivan de Silva joined in this discussion.
Expressing his views on the occasion, the President emphasized that a streamline programme should be chalked out for the proper management of the drought. The President gave instructions to the officials to formulate a programme of providing clean drinking water as a solution to the drinking water issue, a main problem encountered by the people.
Attention was drawn to the reconstruction of reservoirs within forests, which have faced destruction.
The President who also issued instructions not to obstruct the pathways of the elephants, intimated to the officials to prepare pathways for them linking forest reserves so that the elephants could easily access them.
