Beauty who got vehicles on rent .... and secretly sold them

A girl with tempting-looks who had been renting out vehicles from rent-a-car outlet have been in the habit of secretly selling the vehicles. She had been displaying her beauty and at the same time developing a cordial relationship with the outlets and surreptiously selling the vehicles after securing original copies of government approved certificates, subsequently making changes in the documents.

Recently she had hired a vehicle for 2 days from one such outlet in Nugegoda, paying the relevant rent and after having engaged in a chit chat had remarked that if any of her friends would need a vehicle on rent, she would once more return to take the vehicle.

It was in this manner that she had requested that the vehicle be handed over to a male friend of hers who happened to be escorted by her a few days later. Though the vehicle concerned was somewhat of an old type belonging to the 301 series, it was nevertheless in good condition. Because of the trust pinned on her, the owner of the rent-a-car outlet had given the vehicle to her friend for a period of 3 months. After the vehicle was secured in this fashion, the girl referred to earlier had published an advertisement in a newspaper detailing all particulars of the vehicle with the motive of selling it and of course by secret.

Since a large number of people had phoned her with the idea of buying the vehicle as it was lesser than its market-value, one buyer who offered a sum of Rs. 1,425,000 had succeeded in buying the vehicle.

After a few days, the registration book of the vehicle had been handed over to the buyer and it appeared at first sight that it was a genuine copy. However, to double-check himself he had gone to the Motor Traffic Department to check the authenticity of the book. But what he came to know is that it was a fake document with bogus information printed on an original certificate.

Since it was confirmed that it was a false registration book, the duped buyer lodged a complaint with the Colombo Fraud Bureau.

It was after that that this beauty was taken into custody in Hatton area. With this modus operandi the suspect had been engaged in this 'game' of hiring vehicles from rent-a-car outlets and later selling them for quite sometime and 5 other individuals too had been involved in this racket with her. According to the police, they too have been nabbed. It was also found that in order to create the relevant registration book, it had been obtained from a driver who is attached to the Transport Division of Motor Traffic Authority.
