Dark memories on 18th March

Add comments

It was with limitless dedication and self-sacrifice that the war heroes along with the Commander in Chief initiated action to eradicate terrorism from the motherland and create a peaceful environment for all communities to live in unity.

This hemorrhage would have continued within the country if terrorism that was a mortal threat and which was fast spreading like pestilence, was not vanquished.

The tiger terrorists killed three innocent civilians in the Kattankudy area on March 18th 1992, and thus embarked on their killing spree on March 18th during the dark period. Batticaloa was the next target of the tiger terrorists on 18th March in the year 1996. They mooted an attack on the war heroes and took away the lives of two of them.

On the same day these barbaric terrorists unleashed a powerful attack in the Chunnakam area. As a result 21 brave soldiers sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland. The next attack of the terrorists was on a day like today in the year 1999. These ruthless terrorists lurking in the Mannar area launched an attack and killed 11 war heroes. Two more war heroes were killed in another terrorist attack on 18th March 2007 in the Pandirippu area.

The merciless terrorists who were lurking in the Parayanalankulam took away the lives of two war heroes on 18th March 2008. In the year 2009 also on a day like today the cruel terrorists mooted several attacks targeting the gallant soldiers in the Puthukudiyiruppu area, depriving the country of the services of 16 valiant soldiers.

Terrorism which scourged the country and was fast spreading like a pestilence was annihilated on 18th May 2009. By then the tiger terrorists had taken away a total of 65 lives throughout the fear psychosis period. This included three innocent unarmed civilians. The other 62 were war heroes.

Despite the pressure exerted on President Rajapaksa by local as well as foreign forces, the members of the Security forces succeeded in advancing in their humanitarian operations and bringing peace to the country. They did so as a result of the bold and prudent decisions the President took, undeterred by this pressure. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa played a key role by properly guiding these operations. But certain local as well as extraneous forces are attempting to destroy the freedom achieved in this manner with the intention of destabilizing the country. These groups are making various accusations saying that fundamental rights had been violated. But they are not talking a word on the priority given to the protection of human rights by our Security Forces even in the battle zone. This is simply not because they do not have any awareness about it, but purely based on deceitfulness.

No one is talking about the egregious human rights violations committed by the United States and Britain as they are considered as world powers. They are determined to impress upon a Government which injected new life into the civilians by ending the LTTE outfit.

The patriotic citizens of the island nation will not permit such forces to raise their heads whatever initiatives were taken by them. The patriotic fraternity had displayed this to the world not only by words but also by deeds. Real freedom was enthroned in the country by the members of the Security Forces pulverizing the terrorists.

We wish to mention that we do not possess the photographs of all those who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country. As such we appeal to you to dispatch any photographs you possess. There has been a positive response to this call.
