Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has pointed out that anarchists should not be permitted to raise up their heads under the cover of human rights. He called on the Opposition to be cautious and support the motherland. The Minister was speaking during a debate on the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that the work discharged by the Sri Lanka Human Right Commission should be lauded. Any person who issues an order for an arrest under the Prevention of Terrorism Act or the Public Security Ordinance, should inform the Commission. This clearly displays the transparency.
A person authorized by the Commission has the authority to visit and inspect a detention centre, a Police Station or a Prison cell. The Minister said that this is a power vested with the Commission and it mediates in these activities.
Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said it is the Supreme Court which has the authority to give a ruling if a fundamental right is breached. The Human Rights Commission has been established only to make recommendations in respect of breaches. There is a major difference between recommendations and rulings. There may be certain shortcomings or criticisms. But he emphasized that the Government had discharged a major part of the work to protect it. There is no interferences in these activities. They are living in an era in which a new society is being built. The Minister said that anarchists should not be given room to rise under the cover of human rights.
