Tamil civilians relate how terrorists disappeared members of their community

The Presidential Commission probing alleged abductions or disappearances of persons is progressed in Batticaloa for the second day today.


The Second Stage of the Presidential Commission recording evidence on the disappeared commenced in Batticaloa yesterday. The Commission said it progressed successfully for the second day today. Evidence is being recorded on disappearances from 1990 to 2009 and a significant feature was the many complaints that have been made in respect of abductions by tiger terrorists. Evidence was recorded under the auspices of Secretary of the Commission H.W. Gunadasa. The eastern civilians who experienced the horror revealed in this manner.


A woman from the East said that she is residing at Vinayagapuram in Valachchenai. Her brother after returning from work stayed with his family members at home. At that time some of the LTTE cadres entered the house and forcibly dragged him out. Thereafter they heard the sound of gunfire. When they went out they saw that the brother’s eyes were covered with a cloth and shot at the head. She said that it was the LTTE terrorists who committed this crime.


Another woman from the East said that her son was abducted by the tigers during the conflict period. Thereafter they heard that her son was living in the Karadiyanaru area. They also came to know that he had been living in the Wanni. But she added that up to now they are unaware of his whereabouts.


Another civilian of the East told the Commission that he is a resident of Pesalai in Valachchenai. His son was attending school. He was in the house during the school vacation. The LTTE abducted my son in 1991. Thereafter in 1996, the LTTE kidnapped my other four sons. He said that he is really hurt as until now he has no information about his sons.
