66.7 percent of the school candidates who sat the GCE Ordinary Level Examination in December last year are qualified to pursue studies in the Advanced Level. Minister Bandula Gunawardena referred to this as another significant growth in the country’s education.

Addressing a news conference at the Education Ministry to brief the media on the results, the Minister said that when taking into consideration the results, 67 percent have qualified to study in the Advanced Level. 67.53 percent had passed in the science stream while 57.23 percent had passed in the Maths stream. He said there is an improvement in the Maths stream. 47.86 percent had passed in English. Up to 5737 had secured nine “A” passes. This is also an improvement.

He said that 18,997 had failed in all subjects in the year 2009. But this year only 9444 had failed in all subjects. The Examinations Department has listed such schools separately. The Education Minister said the Provincial Ministries will be informed and a special programme mooted to upgrade the standard of education of these schools.
