The entire country is geared to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The Colombo City is congested with New Year shoppers.
The people displayed a keen enthusiasm in purchasing garments, textiles and essential food commodities. It is also the same with suburban areas as well as in other parts of the country. The people are in a position to celebrate the New Year mainly on a grand scale due to the provisions the Government has made for them to purchase their essential food and other commodities at reasonable prices and also due to the peaceful environment created within the country.
In the meantime sufficient buses are operating to cater to the needs of the people leaving for their home towns to celebrate the New Year.
Luxury buses are continuously operating along the Southern Expressway. The National Transport Commission said that sufficient transport facilities are in place sans any obstructions for the people to visit their home towns and other destinations.
The operation of buses along the Southern Expressway from Maharagama to Galle and Matara has been strengthened, while normal buses are operating from the Pettah main bus stand to the outstations. In addition to the normal schedules, additional buses have been deployed for the operation of special services.
The Department of Railways said that New Year specials are also operating to meet the requirements of the commuters for the New Year season.
