The Police come down hard on drunk drivers. Traffic Police are adopting tough new measures and are launching constant operations to apprehend drunk drivers during the New Year season.
The Police have so far arrested 379 such drunk drivers.
The Traffic Police said that countrywide operations are in place to net in those who get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. This comes in the wake of an alarming increase in the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers. The Police have so far succeeded in nabbing 379 persons who had been behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. The Police said that a majority of them had been motorbike riders. This figure alone was 218. It also includes 125 three-wheeler drivers. Three bus drivers have also been taken into custody while the other 43 had been driving other types of vehicles after consuming liquor.
In the meantime, the Government has decided to keep all liquor bars and wine stores closed tomorrow and the day after in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
