The value of lives the country lost during the conflict period as well as the devastation caused to property should be reminisced.
Heroic soldiers dedicated their lives for the noble freedom of the motherland thus enabling for the elimination of terrorism and enthroning permanent peace for all communities to live as a united nation.
The terrorists embarked on their killing spree on 12th April throughout the dark era by lurking in the Katkulam area targeting a group of civilians. Four civilians died in this terrorist assault mooted in the year 1991. On 12th April 1999, the tiger terrorists unleashed a massive attack on the war heroes in the Muhavil area. As a result they took away the lives of three brave soldiers.
The terrorists hurled a hand grenade at a musical show which was in progress in the Fredrick Fort area killing 10 innocent civilians. The incident happened in the year 2000 on a day like today. On 12th April 2006, the ruthless terrorists hurled a bomb in the Trincomalee town, killing 15 innocent civilians and shocking the entire country.
It was in the year 2007 also on a day like today the terrorists targeted an attack on a group of innocent civilians in the Avaranthulawa area. Seven innocent civilians died in this assault. On 12th April 2008, the LTTE terrorists unleashed a powerful attack targeting a group of war heroes in the Munkilmurichchan area. Seven war heroes who were discharging their responsibilities on behalf of the country risking their lives sacrificed their lives on behalf of this noble aim.
Again on 12th April 2009, the next target of the terrorists was a group of civilians in the Mahagodayawa area. Nine innocent civilians were brutally killed in this attack. On the same day these merciless tiger terrorists unleashed a powerful attack targeting the war heroes in the Puthukudiyiruppu area. Four war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland.
Accordingly terrorism which plagued the country in this manner for 30 years had taken away a total of 48 civilian lives on 12th April throughout the fear psychosis period. The number of war heroes killed in this manner was 35. These cruel terrorists had taken away a total of 83 lives on 12th April during the dark era.
The Security Forces succeeded in annihilating terrorism from the Nanthikadal Lagoon on the historic day of 18th May 2009.
The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operations succeeded in uprooting terrorism as a result of the bold decisions taken by President Rajapaksa, as the Commander in Chief undeterred in the face of certain local and foreign forces. The troops were properly guided by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. All communities are now leading happy lives in the motherland that was freed in this manner. But extraneous forces as well as local conspirators are drawing up various plans to destroy this peace and freedom prevailing in the country. But the patriotic citizens of this country will leave no room to destroy this freedom. They have already proven this not only by word but also by deed.
