Tiger leader Gopi and two others who gave leadership for the revival of the LTTE outfit have died in an army shoot out.
These tiger leaders had made an attempt to flee the Nedunkerni Forest in Kilinochchi during the search operation carried out by the Army. Army Media Spokesman Brig. Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that this group died in the ensuing gun fire. It has been identified that those killed in this shoot out was Gopi considered as the new leader of the LTTE outfit and Thevian and Appan who are strong activists of the organization. The people of the area extended their fullest cooperation to the investigations that were launched.
Army Spokesman Brig. Ruwan Wanigasuriya expressing views on the incident said that based on other information as well as the information received from the public, the military was holding inquiries on three leaders who were attempting to revive the LTTE. The Army surrounded the exact location where these suspects were hiding. The Brigadier said they had to open fire as these suspects attempted to flee the area avoiding the troops. Two of the dead have been identified.
One suspect was Thevian while the other was Gopi. Although the third has not yet been identified, it is believed he could be Appan, the third leader. Legal inquiries are in progress. There is a misunderstanding that there is a link between this incident and the death of a soldier during an operation last night. He refuted these allegations and said that these were completely two different incidents.
