56 inmates have been granted holiday vacation in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year for the first time in the Prisons history.
The granting of holiday vacation for 31 inmates under this programme took place under the patronage of Commissioner General for Prisons Chandraratne Pallegama at the Welikada Prisons. The vacation has been granted to these prisoners taking into consideration the good behavior of the inmates who are serving long-term prison sentences for involvement in hardcore crimes.
Although such a vacation system is being mooted once in six months, this is the first time that it is being launched in view of the traditional New Year.
