The Trade Minister has called on consumers not to be deceived by rumours. Minister Johnston Fernando pointed out that there is no shortage of food commodities. He emphasized that traders will not be permitted to sell goods at high prices.
The Trade Minister said that there are sufficient stocks sans any dearth. He said that they are glad that the prices of goods during this traditional New Year are very much low when compared to previous seasons. In addition, the prices of vegetables are also low that the consumers too cannot believe. The farmers are saying that the payments they get are not sufficient and that some vegetables fetch a price of about 15 to 20 rupees a kilogram. These cultivators are demanding a price increase.
The Minister noted that they are able to maintain a stable price for vegetables. The Government is not prepared to provide substandard food. They will not permit a shortage even after the New Year season. Officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority have been appointed to conduct raids.
The Minister called on the consumers to lodge complaints on contact number 1977 if traders were selling goods at high prices.
