Record number of 2.5 million pilgrims visit Sri Pada

A record number of pilgrims visited Sri Pada following the development work mooted


on the instructions of the President.

Several development activities were launched at Sri Pada at the behest of the President. The most significant among them was the installation of the “Dolos-mahe-pahana” and the bell tower and the construction of the “Ranveta.”

The Chief Incumbent of the Sri Pada Vihare, the Ven. Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Thera said that more that 2.5 million pilgrims had arrived via the Hatton route and the Palabaddala route in Ratnapura. The prelate made this announcement at a meeting to apprise State officials of the ending of the Sri Pada pilgrimage season on the Wesak Full Moon Day.

With the Sri Pada pilgrimage season drawing to a close on Wesak Full Moon Poya Day, the Sacred Relics and the sacred objects will be transferred to the Buddhist Centre at Nallathanniya. Thereafter these will be taken to the Galpottawala Raja Maha Vihare at Pelmadulla from Nallathanniya. Arrangements have been made to hold an All Night Pirith Chanting on the 15th of next month after the arrival of the Sacred Relics and the Sacred objects.
