India extends LTTE ban by five years

Add comments

The Indian Central Government has extended its ban on the LTTE outfit for five more years.

The Ministry of Home Affairs in an Extraordinary Gazette notification said the activities of the LTTE remnant cadres, sympathizers and supporters in the Tamil Nadu State suggest that the cadres would ultimately be used by the LTTE for unlawful activities. The Ministry said despite the ban in force, attempts have been made by pro-LTTE outfits and individuals to extend their support to the LTTE.

It feared that LTTE’s objective for a separate homeland for all Tamils threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India, and amounts to cession and secession of a part of the territory of India from the Union. The Ministry underscored that despite the military defeat in 2009 May, LTTE has not abandoned the concept of Eelam, and has been clandestinely working towards the goal undertaking fund raising and propaganda activities. The Home Affairs Ministry noted that remnant LTTE leaders or cadres have also initiated the efforts to regroup the scattered activists and resurrect the outfit locally and internationally.

India initially banned the Tamil Tigers in 1992 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act following the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 by an LTTE suicide bomber. The Central government since then has been extending the ban every two years.
