Flood waters which wreaked havoc in the country following the extreme weather conditions experience in the country during the last few days are now receding. The granting of relief to families displaced by the calamity is continuing.
Many low lying areas went under water following the heavy rainfall that lashed the country during the last few days. The necessary relief including cooked meals are being continuously provided to the displaced. Flood waters in the Ratnapura town have subsided. However, our reporters said that the disastrous situation in several areas including Kalawana still prevails.
The Medawatte village in Ratnapura is threatened with landslides. As a result 21 families are displaced. They have been found alternative shelter at the Bopitiya Vidyalaya while measures have been taken to meet all their requirements.
Flood waters in many areas in the Kalutara District are subsiding. Our correspondents said that while the situation in many areas including Palinda Nuwara and Welipenna is returning to normality, flood waters in some areas including Galpatha, Remuna and Palathota were rising.
Kalutara District Secretary U.D.C. Jayalath said that families displaced in the Kalutara District have been found alternative shelter and action has been initiated to provide all facilities required by them.
There is a landslide threat to the Werella Hena Mountain within the Horana Divisional Secretariat Division as a result of the heavy rainfall. 15 houses have been damaged due to the fall of earth mounds and stones.
