Trade Unions have commended the orders given by the President to pay the pension gratuity according to the old system.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Government Trade Union Federation has applauded the initiative taken by the President to pay the pension gratuity of the Public Servants according to the prevailing system.

The public servants did not appreciate the measure taken to pay through banks as a result of problems that surfaced in the payment of pensions to public servants. As such the President instructed the authorities concerned to pay the pension gratuity as before.

Expressing views at a media conference in Colombo Eric Jayalath of the Sri Lanka Freedom State and Provincial State Management Service said that whatever accusations were made by various political parties and Trade Unions, the Sri Lanka Freedom Trade Union Federation is with the Public Servants. It was the Mahinda Chinthana of the President that paved the way to increase the number of public employees from 600 thousand up to 1.4 million. Ranil Wickremasinghe deprived the public servants of their pensions under the Regaining Sri Lanka programme. They queried whether Ranil Wickremasinghe had the moral right to talk about the pension gratuity.

Bandu Jayasinghe Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Health Department Workers Union said that the UNP Government after taking over the reigns of the country in 2001 scrapped the payment of pensions. But it was the President who granted all benefits to the workers including the pension. He expressed his gratitude to the President for lending an ear to the issues deliberated and issuing the related circulate.
