The Government has drawn its dire attention to overcoming gold smuggling carried out during air flights. It is mulling over the amending of the existing regulations.

Customs Media Spokesman Leslie Gamini said that the law will be strictly enforced against those who breach the regulations.

The Customs Media Spokesman said that the Customs at the Katunayake International Airport had succeeded in nabbing several suspects who had attempted to smuggle gold and jewellery out of the country. It was reported that about two days ago, some Sri Lankans had been arrested in India for smuggling gold.

Accordingly, he revealed that on an assurance on a bring back basis a female Sri Lankan passenger leaving the country will be permitted to take 15 gold sovereigns while a male passenger will be allowed only to take five gold sovereigns. He said the Customs would also introduce a new form in which passengers would have to declare the gold jewellery they take out with them. In addition a foreign passenger would be permitted to take the gold declared during arrival in the country.

The Customs Media Spokesman added that stern action will be taken against anyone who violates these orders.
