Add comments

Lankan Heroes who dedicated their lives for the freedom and integrity of the country battling against colonialists have been commemorated. Notable among them is Weera Keppetipola.

Some of the National Heroes who struggled against the enemies from 1505 to 1948 for freedom of the country were deported. They had to leave their relatives and friends. Branded as traitors, they had to spend a difficult life away from their motherland. Such heroes are being commemorated every year on the 26th of November. Initiatives were taken to remove the word traitor from their name.

The ceremony to commemorate the national heroes was held at the National Museum auditorium this morning under the auspices of Minister T.B. Ekanayake. Awards were presented to representatives of the National Heroes who were deported from the country in the freedom battle in 1818 to Mauritius and also to Malacca in the year 1848, commemorating them. 27 National Heroes including Ehelepola Maha Nilame, Pilimatalawe Maha Nilame, Matthemagoda Disawa, Iriyagama Disawa were deported to Mauritius, while Gongalegodabanda was expelled to Malacca. They also died in those countries. Today was the 196th commemoration of Weera Keppetipola.

A commemoration was organized at the Weera Keppetipola monument near the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy under the auspices of Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.

Another ceremony to commemorate Weera Keppetipola organized by the Uva Provincial Council was held under the patronage of the Chief Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa. The ceremony was held near the Weera Keppetipola statue in the Keppetipola town.
