Customs seize 16,000 litres of ethanol

Customs Officers have seized a container with ethanol. The container has been imported from Malaysia. This is the ninth occasion that the customs had seized a container with ethanol.


Customs at the yard seized the 20 foot long container with 80 barrels containing 16,000 liters of Ethanol today. Its value was 3.2 million rupees. The container was imported by a resident of Borella from Malaysia and was deemed to have evaded millions of taxes. The container of Ethanol had been imported under the guise of MDS boards.

The government has incurred a loss of almost 10 million rupees due to tax evasions by the stock of Ethanol. An establishment in the Kotahena area had been tasked with clearing the container. Director General Customs Jagath P. Wijeweera said that further investigations are being carried out.

Mr. Wijeweera pointed out that the ethanol concentration was 96 percent. Investigations were being pursued. It is not a banned liquid. It can be imported by paying the required import duty. He mentioned that intelligence services have been strengthened. As such he said that they had been able to uncover such rackets.
