Fruits ripened with chemicals uncovered from Pettah

A stock of fruits ripened with the spraying of ethephon has been seized. The value of the stock is 10 million rupees. The Consumer Affairs Authority seized the stock from Pettah. The Authority said that a stock of 75,000 kilograms of fruits was seized. Special operations were launched in the Pettah area in search of fruits being ripened with the application of chemicals.

The Officer of the Consumer Affairs Authority in charge of carrying out raids in Colombo Pradeep Kalutharachchi said that action was initiated to appraise the vendors of the damage caused to the health by the use of chemicals to ripen fruits.

Mr. Kalutharachchi said that they examined all fruit stalls at the Manning Market. They uncovered a mechanism of the application of chemicals to ripen the fruits. It is an improper strategy. Such fruits are not suitable for consumption. He said that these vendors had been engaged in such a process for a long period. Mr. Kalutharachchi added that they expected to continuously carry out raids to detect the use of chemicals to ripen fruits.
