Special operations have been launched to detect mosquito breeding grounds on buildings which are under construction within the Western Province.

The number of dengue cases so far reported this year is 28,225. Fifty percent of this amount is reported from the Western Province, while the figure in the Colombo District alone is in the region of 25 percent. According to surveys carried out it has been revealed that the mosquito breeding environments are rife in new buildings which are under construction within the Western Province including the Colombo District.

Drawing attention to this matter, the Committee which has been set up to crackdown on mosquito breeding grounds has decided to launch special mosquito control programmes in new buildings within the Province. It is hoped to solicit the contribution of all Public and Private Sector establishments for this programme. Plans are afoot to moot a second mosquito control programme during the school vacation. The details were revealed at a meeting held at the Health Ministry. This meeting was presided by Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilake.
