Trains are slated to operate to Palai from Colombo after a lapse of 23 years. The maiden journey is scheduled to take place next month.

The Yaal Devi train is now operating on the Northern rail track up to Kilinochchi. Work on the rail track from Kilinochchi to Palai has already been completed. The installation of the signal network has now entered the final stage. LTTE terrorism brought to a complete halt the operation of trains on the Northern rail track for nearly 26 years.

The Government embarked on a programme to develop the North after the brave soldiers ended LTTE terrorism under the bold leadership of President Rajapaksa and the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Under this programme priority was accorded to the construction of the Northern rail track. Work on this track was launched immediately and the work is progressing satisfactorily.

The first stage has already been completed. The track has been developed from Vavuniya to Omanthai. Work thereafter commenced on the second stage to construct the rail track up to Kilinochchi. Work then proceeded on the 40-kilometre rail track from Kilinochchi to Palai. The rail track has been constructed so that the train could run at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour.
