The Elections Commissioner has said that his Department is prepared to hold polls irrespective of the time of dissolution of the Provincial Councils.
Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya mentioned that he is prepared to issue announcements calling for the nominations for the Provincial Council.
The Elections Commissioner asserted that his Department his prepared to face any election whether the Provincial Councils were dissolved today, tomorrow or the day after. Anyone who carefully study the Elections Act can determine the time the election will be held from the date of dissolution. Announcements calling for nominations will be issued the first Thursday following the date of dissolution.
Nominations will be entertained after 14 days from that date and will close within 21 days. After five days announcements on elections with regard to the polling booths and the names of candidates will be made public. From then onwards, according to the Elections Act, the Saturday following five weeks or six weeks or six weeks will be the polling day. The Elections Commissioner added that the Act clearly stipulates that the elections should be held on a Saturday.
