Plans are afoot to link the national power grid to the international electricity transmission network.
Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has revealed plans of linking the national power grid to the international power network is slated to be launched in the future. She pointed out that this is a good opportunity to market the excess power generated in the country. She was speaking at a function held to grant electricity supplies to 100 families in the Balangoda area. The expenditure incurred on the programme was 10 million rupees.
Further speaking on the occasion, the Minister emphasized that initial plans of the international power transmission network which will come up via several zones from Russia are already in place.
The Minister said that Sri Lanka can generate sufficient solar power while small wind power energy plants could also be established. As excess energy cannot be stored it should be sold. The Minister revealed that necessary action was being initiated to put up transmission lines between India and Sri Lanka to sell excess power to India.
Sri Lanka has already reached the national electrification ratio of 94 percent which is a substantial improvement in the power sector compared to the electrification level of 70 percent by the end of 2005.The Government’s aim is to reach 100 percent electricity access to the entire population.
