Fresh milk and midday meal for students of remote schools

The Mahinda Chinthana which ensures that no school child will be permitted to undertake studies in hunger becomes a reality. The national ceremony to provide a free meal to school children will be held tomorrow. The programme of providing a fresh glass of milk will commence on Wednesday.


Making the Mahinda Chinthana Policy statement a reality, the programme of providing a free meal to children in remote areas commenced in the year 2006. The midday meal was given to children numbering around one million. The meal will be provided to the children based on a special menu. The national ceremony in relation to the programme of providing the midday meal to children this year will be held at the Pandikaaramaduwa Vijaya Maha Vidyalaya at Galenbeidunuwea tomorrow. In the meantime the granting of a fresh glass of milk to the children with the aim of moulding a healthy and active generation will commence on Thursday. The national ceremony will be held at the Mahasen Vidyalaya at Padaviya on Wednesday. The programme will be mooted in about 7000 selected schools. The malnutrition issue of children would be minimized by the provision of a midday meal and a fresh glass of milk. It will also lead to an increase in the percentage of attendance. Minister Duminda Dissanayake said that the Government will be incurring an expenditure of about 4000 million rupees in the provision of a midday meal and a glass of fresh milk to school children this year.
