The National programme to provide a glass of fresh milk to upgrade the nutrition standards of school children has commenced. The national ceremony was held at the Mahasen Maha Vidyalaya in Padaviya.
The national programme to provide a meal and a glass of milk with the intention to enhance the nutritional intake of the children according to the Mahinda Chinthana, has been launched. The provision of a meal to the school children commenced last Monday, while the programme to provide a glass of milk to the children was unveiled from the Mahasen Vidyalya in Padaviya yesterday. This programme is operative in around 7000 selected schools.
The Government will be spending about 4000 million rupees this year to provide a midday meal and a glass of fresh milk to school children.
Minister Duminda Dissanayake speaking at the national ceremony said that the Government was incurring an expenditure of 21 rupees on a glass of milk.
The Minister said that they commenced today in providing a glass of milk to 250 thousand children from 1000 schools. Also the provision of a nutritious meal to one million children from 7800 schools was launched from Monday
