Sixth death anniversary of Minister D.M. Dassanayake

Another valuable life was lost six years ago following the massive destruction unleashed by the terrorists killing an inestimable number of persons.

He was Dasanayka Mudiyanselage Dasanayake. But he was well known as D.M. Dassanayake.


D.M. Dasanayake had rendered yeoman service to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He was the most popular politico throughout the Anamaduwa electorate. D.M. Dassanayake who confronted political violence on several occasions managed to protect his life in the face of such incidents. Born on 29th April 1953, he had his academic studies at the Navodya Primary School in Andigama and later pursued his studies at Ananda College Chilaw. He commenced his career as a Building Inspector He entered politics by winning a seat from the Puttalam District while serving as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Organizer of the Anamaduwa electorate. He was a revolutionary Member of Parliament during his 14-yer Parliamentary career. He became a very popular character not only in the Northwestern Province but throughout the country due to his revolutionized activities.

He was travelling to Colombo on 08th January from his native place Anamaduwa. By the time his vehicle was nearing Jaela a large explosion was heard astonishing the people of the entire area. The news was that Nation Building non-cabinet Minister was killed in a terrorist claymore mine attack. Its six years since the death of D.M. Dassanayake. Not only the Northwestern Province, but the entire country still remembers him mainly due to his revolutionized political character.

Meanwhile, a series of Pinkamas was held to mark the sixth death anniversary of D.M. Dassanayake.

The series of Pinkamas which commenced with the delivery of a Dhamma Sermon at the Anandarama Temple in Anamaduwa drew to an end with the offering of alms to the members of the Maha Sangha at Sadahampaya in Anamaduwa.

The Pinkamas were organized under the guidance of the Ven. Kudawewa Jinarathana Thera.

Many people’s representatives including Minister Piyankara Jayaratne, and family members of D.M. Dassanayake joined in the occasion.
