Sri Lanka has the lowest maternity mortality rate in South Asia

The minimum maternity mortality rate among the South Asian countries prevails in Sri Lanka. This is revealed in a survey carried out in respect of National Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care Needs Assessment.

The report on the survey carried out in respect of Emergency and Neonatal Care Needs Assessment at the National and Provincial levelwas handed over to Minister Maithripala Sirisena at the Health Ministry recently. Director of the Family Health Bureau Dr. Chithramali de Silva presented the report titled “National Guidelines for Maternal Care” to the Minister. The report prepared by the Family Health Bureau was formulated after the conduct of an island wide survey.

Doctors Lalini Rajapaksa, Lakshman Senanayake, Chandani Galwaduge, Dhammika Rochelle, Nilmini Hemachandra and Padma Silva were involved in the conduct of the survey. This study will be of immense benefit on behalf of further reducing the maternity and child mortality rates which now stand at a minimum level aimed at enhancing the standard of the Maternity Health and Neonatal Care Needs Assessment. The lowest maternity mortality rate in South Asia prevails in Sri Lanka. The number of child births in Sri Lanka per year is round 350 thousand. Infant mortality rate stands at nine per 1000 births. The maternity mortality rate reported is 37 for every 100 thousand live child births.

Speaking on the occasion Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that Sri Lanka is well ahead of maternity health services than in other Third World countries.

Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilake, Health Services Director Dr. Palitha Mahipala were among those present at this event.
