The Hindu festival of Maha Shivratri (Great Night of Lord Shiva), dedicated to worship God Shiva, is celebrated today.

Maha Shivratri is observed on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha every year on the month of Maagh according to the Hindu calendar. Women observe fast and offer prayers both to Lord Shiva and Parvati to seek a blissful married life.

In a message to mark the occasion, President Rajapaksa said that Hindus in Sri Lanka have lived for centuries in brotherhood and harmony with the followers of other religions. They now have the conditions of peace throughout the land to freely celebrate this important festival in true spirit of unity and understanding. The President offered his best wishes to all Sri Lankan Hindu devotees so that a better tomorrow dawns for them and all their aspirations are fulfilled.

In another message Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that a firm determination should be made today to join hands in brotherhood to further develop unity among all communities. He pointed out in his message that it would be possible to build a virtuous society by working in co-existence irrespective of caste, religious or party differences.
