The Sri Lankan navy has arrested 19 Indian fishermen. They were found to have crossed the International Maritime Boundary and trespassing on Sri Lanka’s territorial waters last night.
The Navy spokesman said these fishermen were intercepted when they were engaged in bottom trawling in the seas off the Delft. The fishermen who had come in five trawlers were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and handed over to the Fisheries Inspector concerned.
The Navy, a few days ago, also apprehended 38 fishermen. These Indian fishermen are still straying into Sri Lankan waters despite the lengthy discussions conducted by representatives of the two countries. It was emphasized at these discussions that Indian fishermen who enter Sri Lankan territorial waters will be nabbed.
