A stock of expired spices has been seized. Court orders have been received to destroy the stock.
The expired stock of spices imported from India and unsuitable for human consumption was recovered from a food processing centre which was operating in the Kalugampitiya watte area at Gonawala in Kelaniya. Around 60 thousand 100 gram packs were detected and its value was estimated at more than nine million rupees. The stock of spices and a suspect were produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court.
The suspect was imposed a fine of 20 thousand rupees and a six-month suspended imprisonment. The Consumer Affairs Authority has uncovered that a stock of expired spices had already been released to the market.
