South Asia Summit on Youth and Human Rights opens in Colombo

The South Asia Summit on Youth and Human Rights opened at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Performing Arts Theatre in Colombo today under the patronage of Minister Dulles Alahapperuma. The aim of this conference is to impart knowledge to the youth through education on the protection of human rights and its significance. The recommendations of this conference are due to be submitted to the World Conference on Youth which is slated to be held within the next few days. Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Dr. Chris Nonis delivered the keynote address. In his address, Dr. Chris Nonis elaborated on how human rights were protected in Sri Lanka. He pointed out to the delegates of the conference how the human rights of the citizens in Sri Lanka were guaranteed after the annihilation of terrorism in the year 2009. The Summit is organized by the ‘Road to Rights’ Youth Led Movement in collaboration with the Youth for Human Rights International education programme under the supervision of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry, Mass Media and Information Ministry and National Youth Services Council. Chairman and Director General of the Youth Services Council Lalith Piyum Perera also addressed the gathering. The meeting will draw to a close on Sunday.
