Late Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was born on the 11th of January 1953 at Kochchikade in Negombo. He commenced his professional career as a teacher but later became famous as a lawyer. He engaged in active politics from 1978 and was appointed as the Chief organizer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1984 in the Katana electorate. Until his death in 1989 he was elected to parliament and held several ministerial portfolios. The LTTE terrorists had his name on the top of their list as he opposed LTTE terrorism in and outside parliament and overseas. LTTE terrorists were able to kill him as he did not care for the threats and engaged in public service. He was killed in a LTTE suicide bomb attack on the 6th of April 2008, at Weliveriya when he went there to flag off a marathon. Many others lost their lives and more than 90 were injured in the attack. The 6th commemoration ceremony of late Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle took place this morning near his memorial at Weliveriya with the participation of his wife parliamentarian Sudharshani Fernandopulle and other parliamentarians.
