No one can forget the carnage caused and the destruction unleashed to public property in the country by the terrorists.
The country would have still been plagued by terrorism, if the LTTE which was a mortal threat had not been totally uprooted by the heroic soldiers under the guidance of the fearless Commander in Chief.
The tiger terrorists who broke into the Oddusudan area in Vavuniya on 05th June 1984 unleashed an attack on a group of war heroes, killing three of them. On 05th June 1997, the tiger terrorists lying in ambush in the Vavuniya area mooted an attack taking the lives of four war heroes.
In the year 1998 on a day like today, the terrorist launched a heinous assault on the war heroes. As a result the country lost the valuable lives of 21 war heroes. On 05th June in the year 2000, the ruthless tiger terrorists launched a small weapons attack in Jaffna killing three war heroes. On the same day, the tiger terrorists unleashed an attack on the military brigade in the Vettilaikerni area. 25 war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
In the year 2001 also on a day like today another attack was launched by the terrorists on the war heroes within the Kattayamunai area grabbing the lives of seven war heroes. Demented by the continuous defeats suffered, the blood thirsty terrorists carried out two assaults in the Muhamalai and Nagarkovil area, killing four war heroes.
Terrorism which was fast spreading like a pestilence was uprooted from the country on 18th May 2009. By then these merciless terrorists had taken away a total of 86 lives. Among them were three innocent unarmed civilians. The other 83 brave soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland.
Following the fearless and unwavering decisions taken by President Rajapaksa as the Commander in Chief and under the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa., the heroic soldiers succeeded in advancing in the humanitarian operations.
Overcoming all the impediments, the brave soldiers achieved their victorious goal at the Nanthikadal Lagoon obliterating the terrorists due to their immense dedications.
Certain hostile forces are determined to destroy this peaceful environment. But the patriotic fraternity of the motherland will never permit such forces to raise their heads again.
The nation has proven this with clear evidence emphasizing that they remained with courage and strength with the Commander in Chief and the Government.
These dark memories are being refreshed in these episodes that the nation may act responsibly in a manner that ensures such destruction would not recur. Action has been taken to display the photographs of the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices in the battle to rout terrorism and discharge a noble service as an honour to the sacrifices they have made.
