Independent Television Network which is celebrating the Proud Journey of 35 years is still going stronger.
This is a brief record prepared in view of the 35th Anniversary of the Independent Television, the Channel of the Motherland which has fulfilled its obligations on behalf of the country.
The construction of a building got underway 35 years ago at Wickremasinghepura which was considered to be the highest point in Colombo and surrounded by shrubs. Construction proceeded gradually and thus the operations of Independent Television Network commenced. It was possible for Independent Television Network from 35 years back to impart a novel experience on television which had hitherto not been witnessed by the Sri Lankans.
The work of the Channel commenced only with one studio. But now it is being endowed with a studio complex. Thevis Guruge took over as the first Competent Authority of the Channel. Even today, the first studio of the Institution has been named after him as a mark of tribute to Thevis Guruge. The number of artistes groomed from the Thevis Guruge Studio since then is inestimable. There is no end to the number of artistes gifted to the field of arts. Many who are now serving in the television media originated from Independent Television Network.
The number of Awards received by the Channel year after year has explicitly proven that it is the Number One Channel in the country. It has won the Business Excellence Award continuously for eight years in addition to being feted with the SLIM Nielson People’s Award for five years.
The highest number of Awards bagged by Independent Television Network in every Tele Award Festival is another example to emphasize that it is the leading Channel in the country. When looking back during this 35-year period, ITN has been honoured with the People’s Award as well as other outstanding awards.
It is not necessary to mention again the responsibilities the Channel had fulfilled during any grave situation the country had faced. As the Channel of the Motherland it was able to portray the truth to the country as well as the world before any other Channel on the humanitarian operations that were launched to rout the terrorists. As the News Division of the Channel of the motherland it was able to report to the country the ferocious experiences within the battlefront. ITN was strong enough to display to the country and the world before others, the end of the cruel war. Even the News Division of the Independent Television Network had made a proud contribution during its 35th birthday.
The 35-year journey was not a journey on a bed of roses but a victorious path traversed in the midst of a thick forest. ITN was able to become a great of the greats. From the past ITN was fortunate to always have strong guiders.
The 35-year journey it had traversed through a strong leadership and a correct vision has further grown stronger. It is not a channel which runs behind money. It can proudly say that it is fulfilling the responsibilities of the country.
ITN can be clearly viewed sans any disturbance from Point Pedro to the Dondra Point and from the Dondra Point to Point Pedro. It has now become the Channel of the people which also feels their pulse. Independent Television Network always represented the public of this country. As such it was commemorating the 35th birthday of the people.
While sincerely appreciating the viewers for consistently remaining with the Channel, its only pledge on this memorable occasion is to assure that it will continue to serve the motherland as in the past.
