Parliamentarian Dilum Amunugama has said that what lies behind the budget defeats of certain local government institutions are personal agendas and therefore it’s not a political defeat.
The Parliamentarian said that Kandy Municipal Council was governed by the UNP for 58 years and the Gangawata Korale for 13 years. Now they are being administered by the UPFA but the budgets were passed without clashes.
He said that only in a few local government institutions that the budgets are defeated. At certain places it has been due to the activities of certain Chairmen and at others it has been due to someone’s need to oust the Chairmen in order to climb to that position. He said that certain sections of the media have attempted to show it as a defeat of the SLFP. It is wrong as the budget was won in most of the local government institutions. He said that the UNP General Secretary had asked the members of Kandy Municipal Council and Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha which were earlier UNP bastions to vote against, although the budgets were passed unanimously.
