Sri Lanka says that the revised US draft resolution violates the founding principles of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the revised resolution attempts to initiate an international inquiry mechanism on Sri Lanka.
Addressing a briefing on Sri Lanka for the Member and observer states of the African region of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva yesterday, the Minister pointed out that Sri Lanka is committed to moving forward with the several domestic processes it had put in place to address issues connected with the conflict. The Minister further said that Sri Lanka has shown its commitment to comprehensive reconciliation through the significant advances made on many fronts. Sri Lanka has achieved progress in resettlement, rehabilitation of ex-combatants, restoration of democratic institutions, rebuilding of physical infrastructure, strengthening administrative systems and ensuring normality in conflict affected areas. Minister Samarasinghe called on the African countries to demonstrate their solidarity with Sri Lanka during and after the sessions of the Human Rights Council.
