Tourism developed to improve lives of the people

Minister Basil Rajapaksa has said that the determination of the Government is to improve the tourism industry targeting the upgrading of the living standards of the people.


The Minister made this reference joining in the opening of the Sigiriya Aliya Hotel constructed within the Cultural Triangle under the programme of building 50 thousand hotel rooms on behalf of foreign tourists. The new hotel has 96 rooms and has been built as an environmentally friendly hotel.


Chairman of the Sigiriya Aliya Hotel Chandra Wickremasinghe said that the new hotel project will generate 220 direct jobs while providing indirect employment to 500 persons. A museum has been established within the hotel premises to enhance the knowledge on old agricultural equipment and traditions. Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Provincial Minister Pramitha Tennekoon, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Bashwara Gunaratne and Chairman of the Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha K.D. Somatilake were among those present at the opening of the Hotel.
